KENET membership traverses the entire spectrum of the participants and stakeholders in the education sector in Kenya. These include:
Universities
The universities have the largest collection of learning resources in libraries. It is estimated that taken together, universities hold approximately 70% of all library resources in the country. Therefore Universities are a critical focus in the development of the Kenya Education Network. The country now has over six public universities, with the most recently established universities giving greater emphasis to technology and science-oriented degree programmes. In addition to the public universities there are over ten private universities in the country offering a range of degree programmes. The student population at the various universities range between 2,500 to 20,000 students.
National Research Institutions
These are considered centres of excellence for researchers and for education generally. Some of the most current research findings are found in research libraries. The research findings are made transparent through the library catalogues of research institutions and to the world through the proposed electronic Union Catalogue of libraries in Eastern Africa. National Research institutions are therefore considered of strategic value to the Kenya Education Network.ICIPE, KARI, ILRI, ICRAF and IDRC are among the large research institutions that members of KENET.
Major Public Libraries and Archival Institutions
Libraries considered centres of knowledge. In Kenya, there is a chain of libraries known as the Kenya National Library services which is probably the only decent learning centre available per town Kenya National Library Services (KNLS) and the Kenya National Archives and Documentation Centre are of considerable strategic value to the Kenya Education Network. There are also several other private libraries like the British Council Library. It should also be noted that virtually all of the academic institutions beginning with the secondary schools up to the higher education institutions have libraries.
Middle level Colleges, Polytechnics and Institutes of Technology
These institutions hold the second largest collection of information resources collectively. Their library catalogues will be found in the proposed electronic Union Catalogue of libraries under the Virtual African Library-Kenya. They are therefore be considered ofstrategic value for the Kenya Education Network. These institutions widespread countrywide.
Post Secondary Management and Business Training Institutions
Are considered important because they train capacity in management of resources to both the young executives and the top management personnel in the country. These institutions are involved also involved in training high school leavers in various vocational subjects e.g. carpentry, accounts, welding, mechanics, catering and teaching, leading to certificates or diploma awards. They also hold some very special informational resources that are of value to the development of techniques of management of the national resources. They too should be considered as having strategic value to the Kenya Education Network.
Primary Schools and Secondary Schools
There has been a remarkable expansion in primary education, both in terms of the number of schools established and in the number of children enrolled, over the past three decades. At independence, there were 6,056 primary schools with a total enrolment of 891,600 children. At the same time, trained teachers numbered 92,000. In 1990 there were over 14,690 primary schools, with an enrolment of slightly over five million children and with nearly 200,000 trained teachers respectively.
There has been a tremendous increase in both the number of secondary schools and in student enrolment in response to the rapidly increasing number of primary school leavers seeking entry to the secondary level. In 1963 there were only 151 secondary schools, with a total enrolment of 30,120 students. Today there are nearly 3,000 secondary schools with a total enrolment of 620,000 students.
Primary Education in Kenya has also been made free since the change of government in January 2003.
