This second phase of the project, co sponsored by Rockefeller Foundation, targets fifty universities in East Africa. The project dubbed “Promoting Accessioning of East Africa’s universities to a higher state of E-readiness,” aims at enabling higher education institutions make effective use of ICTs in learning, teaching, research and management.

An initial survey will be conducted on selected universities that will involve the use of a diagnostic assessment framework that will be derived by the researchers from an e-readiness assessment tool originally developed by the Center for International Developments (CID) from Harvard University. The survey focuses on 17 indicators grouped into the following five categories:

-Network access
-the networked campus
-networked learning
-networked society
-Institutional ICT policy and strategy.

Very soon, KENET will contact all universities in East with an invitation to take part in the survey.

This survey the first component of the bigger University Accessioning project that comprises of the following activities:

  1. Disseminate e-readiness project requests for proposals to Universities in the 5 target countries: Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi, analyze applicants and select approximately 50 universities for project participation.
  2. Produce e-readiness assessment reports for each of the approximately 50 participating institutions.
  3. Facilitate the creation of ICT strategies and financing plans for 5-10 universities including roadmaps for implementation.
  4. Conduct two forums for university leadership on ICT capacity building.
  5. Conduct two e-learning pilot projects.

Professor Meoli Kashorda is the lead researcher in the project and is assisted by Mr. John Matogo, who is the project coordinator
