KTCIP Project Update

Monday, 06 April 2009 06:31 | PDF | Print | E-mail

We are pleased to inform you that 17 institutions have already been connected to the Kenya education Network trust bandwidth.

The four phase 1  institutions in Western Kenya (namely, Maseno University, Masinde Muliro University, Kisii and Kisumu polytechnic) as well as Daystar University in Athi River  are yet to be connected. The delay in western Kenya is due to the fact that Kenya Data Networks  is yet to complete the backbone and last mile fiber networks in that region. The original VSATs will be used as we wait for the completion of cable works.  Daystar has a unique problem of local government and NEMA delaying permission for cable acces.

1.3 million dollar network that will be used to build our own private network arrives on Monday April 6, 2009! The equipment will be tested and then installed at the six KENET Points of Presence in Mombasa, Nairobi, Meru, Nakuru, Eldoret, and Kisumu. Each participating institution will also get one access router. Most of Phase 2 institutions will be connected after full implementation of the private network (LOT 2) according to the original design.

In order to facilitate billing for services for the 61 institutions to KENET, we have had to prepare formal commercial contracts to be signed by the Chief Executive Officers. From 6th to 17th April 2009 , all of the participating institutions will sign a formal commercial contract with KENET.

KENET is also rapidly scaling up its technical and management capacity to support such a large number of institutions that will be consuming large amounts of bandwidth. KENET will also train technical personell from the various participating institutions on equipment and on bandwidth management
