The Kenya Education Network Trust was formed on October 27, 2000.The Following were the five founder institutions:

  1. Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT)
  2. The University of Nairobi (UON)
  3. Moi University
  4. United States International University (USIU)
  5. Daystar University

The original Trustees were drawn from the 5 Founder institutions. However, under the Kenyan law, they are trustees as individuals and not as representatives of their institutions. The Trustees were:

  1. Professor Francis Gichaga
  2. Professor Ratemo W. Michieka
  3. Professor Raphael Manavu
  4. Professor. Freida Brown
  5. Professor Stephen Erisa Joseph Talitwala

The trust deed allows for up to 7 Trustees. The additional 2 trustees can be selected by the trustees but one must be from the private sector and the other from the public sector. In their meeting of May 31, 2001, the trustees appointed the following as trustees:

  1. Mr. Augustine Cheserem , MD, Telkom Kenya
  2. Mr. Samuel Chepkonga, Director General, Communications Commission of Kenya (CCK)

The Current KENET Trustees are:

  1. Professor George Magoha (Vice Chancellor, The University of Nairobi) - Chairman
  2. Professor Freida Brown (Vice Chancellor, USIU) - Secretary
  3. Rev. Professor Godfrey Nguru (Former, Vice Chancellor, Daystar University) - Treasurer
  4. Professor Richard K. Mibei (Vice Chancellor, Moi University)
  5. Professor Mabel Imbuga (Vice Chancellor, JKUAT)
  6. Mr. Charles Njoroge (Communications Commission of Kenya)
  7. Prof. Crispus M. Kiamba (PS Ministry of Higher Education)

The highest decision-making body is the KENET Board of Trustees. The functions of the Trustees are:

  1. To employ and pay any person or persons (not being a trustee) to supervise organize and carry on the work authorized by the Trustees;
  2. To raise funds and invite and receive contributions from any person or persons whatsoever by way of loan, subscription, donation and otherwise provided that the Trustees shall not undertake any permanent trading activities in raising funds for the said objects; to co-operate and collaborate with voluntary bodies and statutory authorities operating in similar charitable fields and to exchange information and advice;
  3. To establish and operate both current accounts and deposit accounts with bankers in the name of the Trust provided that cheques drawn on such accounts shall be signed by not less than two Trustees;
  4. To purchase take on lease or in exchange hire or otherwise acquire any property (movable and immovable) and any rights and privileges necessary for the attainment of the said objects and to construct maintain and alter any buildings or erections so necessary as aforesaid;
  5. To make regulations for the management of any property which may be acquired;
  6. To sell let mortgage dispose of or turn to account all or any of the property or assets of the Trust
  7. To invest Trust moneys not immediately required for the said objects in or upon such investments or securities or property as are authorized by the terms of Trust Deed and the Trustee Act;
  8. To do all such other or lawful things as are necessary for the attainment of the said objects.
