KENET is an agent of the government of Kenya, through the Kenya ICT Board, in the support and implementation a national broadband Internet network for universities and colleges. In the past four
years, it has been agent for $21.5 million contracts for upgrading the national broadband network for the higher education and research institutes in Kenya. Thus, the Government of Kenya has been the largest broadband infrastructure donor for KENET member institution. Other infrastructure donors in the past 12 years have included:
- The United States Development Agency (USAID) that provided the initial infrastructure grant of $1.1 million to KENET in the year 2000.
- The Partnership for Higher Education in Africa (Rockefeller Foundation and Ford Foundation) that provided a $500,000 grant to build the first international VSAT network
- Google that has donated refurbished network equipment for building campus networks at member institutions. In addition, Google has provided grants in form of servers worth about $60,000 and last mile access radio links and campus wireless network grant worth $200,000.
