What Broadband Networks Assets does KENET hold in Trust of the Members?
The main assets held in Trust of the members include:
- The Alternative Networks Facilities Provider license issued by CCK that permits member institutions to extend their campus networks and to build a national broadband network in partnership with other commercial operators or KENET owned radio or fiber-based links.
- Internet address blocks for all member institutions allocated by the Internet Governance bodies (e.g., AfriNIC). It has adequate IPv4 and IPv6 address blocks for all member institutions and any other educational institutions in Kenya allowing any member institution to peer directly with any other collaborating educational or research institutions anywhere in the world.
- A National Broadband IP network (physical network) consisting of seven Points of Presence in Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Eldoret, Nakuru and Meru interconnected using commercial optical fiber links and connecting 94 campuses of member institutions as at March 2012. 110 KM Indefeasible Rights of Usage (IRU) dark fiber pair used to setup the broadband core network connecting six of the large private and public universities. At the end of 2012, it will also have 188 KM of last mile fiber spurs to 18 universities in different parts of the country as well as about 736 KM of the NOFBI dark fiber pairs 5-year IRU.
- KENET holds the following IRU circuits assets that can be used to provide up 1950 Mb/s of International connectivity and bandwidth:
- 2 x STM-4 15-year IRU circuits (1240 Mb/s) from Nairobi to London Telicity 2 data center. This was purchased in September 2011 using World Bank Funds.
- 1 x STM-1 (155 Mb/s circuit) 20 year IRU from Nairobi to London purchased by KENET in October 2009.
- 1 x STM-4 TEAMS circuit from Mombasa landing station to Fujaira donated by the Government of Kenya in the year 2010.
