About 30 ICT directors met on April 25, 2014 for a half-day workshop at Serena Hotel facilitated by Prof. Meoli Kashorda and Dale Smith of the Network Startup and Resource Center (NSRC), University of Oregon.
This workshop was convened on short notice and 30 participants were able to attend. see the presentations and a summary of the discussions here. KENET has grown as a physical network – we just added an STM-16 (2.4 Gb/s) SEACOM capacity at the start of April 2014 and we are truly a low-congestion network now.
The discussions were on issues related to building and upgrading scalable campus networks that will serve the many students who will bring laptops and smartphones to your campuses (already 53% of the students have laptops but only 13% are registered in your campus networks). Also discussed were the sources of funding for institutions (student labs fees or “selling” your services to user departments). We all agreed that we do not yet have a critical mass of network engineers or administrators and we need to find way to attract and retain them. See the employee value equation.
We shall be launching the E-readiness Survey 2013 report on May 30, 2014 at the Intercontinental hotel, Nairobi and we have invited Vice Chancellors for the launch.
