What services does KENET provide?
KENET provides the following key services:
- Basic Internet bandwidth services to connected member institutions at competitive and sustainable prices (It was $160 Mb/s as at March 2012 for the majority institutions). This is low-congestion, highest quality 1:1 contention Internet bandwidth with unlimited bursting in the evenings and weekends.
- Independent ICT and campus networks design and operations technical advisory services on a cost-recovery basis. For example, in the past one year it has worked with about three university colleges to setup backbone campus networks.
- Capacity development through training and Internships of the technical staff. Some of these courses often in collaboration with international partners.
- Gateway to advanced e-infrastructures for research that are available exclusively within the Research and Education Community anywhere in the world. Kenyan researchers can now access the Africa Grid Science Gateway , a Web 2.0 portal that gives researchers access to advanced applications for Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science, Big Data research. - In addition to basic Internet services, KENET provides the following network services:
a. DNS servers services for the member institutions and associated domain registration and assignment of IP address block
b. Network monitoring and network operations center services to the institutions, including proxy server setups and bandwidth management
c. Institutional E-mail setup, hosting, and scrubbing
d. Virtual Private Networks for campuses
e. Video and Web Conferencing services
f. Open source software download services (Debian Linux, FreeBSD etc.)
g. Web caching services. KENET hosts the Google cache for the entire higher educationsector
h. EDUROAM services that supports seamless roaming of students and faculty within the KENET community and other NRENs users.
i. Restoration and backup services for Internet services (e.g., leased lines backup or international bandwidth restoration when there is an undersea fiber cut)
j. Internet Peering services at the Kenya Internet Exchange Point, London Internet exchange and with GEANT, the European regional research and education network. This gives KENET users access the widest range of commodity and R & E content in Kenya.
k. IP transit services in London for access to commodity Internet.
All of the above services increase the value of KENET and also reducing the long-term unit cost of broadband Internet. All other ISPs in Kenya use the KENET pricing as their base. This means KENET has the indirect role of regulating the price of bandwidth in Kenya.
