Faculty Workshop Held On Use Of KENET Virtual Training Lab
Faculty who teach ICT Networking courses benefited from a 3 day workshop hosted by KENET. The workshop which ran from September 18-20, 2017 gave the 25 participants an opportunity to use the KENET virtual training lab for the first time. The training which was fully funded by KENET strengthened the faculty’s technical capacity so that their students can be more productive.
The 13 participating Universities were represented by two faculty members from the following Institutions; Kenyatta University, Meru University of Science and Technology, Riara University, South Eastern Kenya University, Daystar University, Dedan Kimathi University of Technology, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), Strathmore University, Maasai Mara University, University of Kabianga, Moi University, Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology and Technical University of Kenya.
Access to the KENET virtual lab mean that lecturers can now provide hands-on training to students on routing and switching. KENET will grant access to member institutions that have requested to use the KENET training lab remotely from their campus network. The KENET lab will enable the faculty and students to access virtualized machines where they can practice skills like Linux/ Unix, Matlab, Windows Operating Systems etc.
“I thank KENET for this opportunity. I intend to replicate to my students what I have learnt, especially the module on virtual LANS,” said Dr. Lawrence Letting, a senior lecturer of Electrical Engineering at Moi University.
KENET holds quarterly trainings and workshops for its members as one of its initiatives to realize its mission of integrating ICT in teaching and learning. By providing both the infrastructure and improving capacities through trainings, KENET opens up a new world of education for students and staff.
Jeremiah Kioko, one of the trainers from KENET states that the benefits of such trainings will be projected in future. "We hope that the participants will use the networking lab to give more hands-on experience to the students, thus contribute to better quality graduates entering the market in the next few years," he said.
