KENET Connectivity Bundled Services
Web Hosting
KENET hosts one website for free to connected member institutions either on a shared CPANEL server or on a dedicated Virtual Private Server. Any subsequent websites are chargeable at enterprise service rates. Member institutions are required to administer the website.
Domain Services
KENET registers, renews and hosts domains on behalf of its members. This is a non-chargeable service for the first domain registered and a standard charge for any subsequent domain names. The domains are registered with KENIC (.ke) on behalf of the KENET members.
Mail Filtering
KENET offers its members a secure utility to protect their email boxes from spamming.
Bandwidth Monitoring
KENET provides bandwidth monitoring graphing services to its connected members. Members are given access to the graphs that show how much bandwidth the member is consuming at a particular time.
IP Address Assignment and Management
KENET manages IP addressing space (IPv4 and IPv6 addresses) on behalf of its member institutions connected to the KENET network. Each member is assigned a /24 IPv4 range of IP addresses. Additional IPs are issued to Member institutions upon request at no cost.
Web/Video Conferencing
KENET provides a high quality videoconferencing service that enables its members to communicate with each other and with endpoints outside of KENET. The video conferencing service supports IP and ISDN at different speeds and allows multiple end points to join a single video conference.
The KENET video conferencing facilities are located at the KENET Secretariat office, USIU, Egerton University main campus, Technical Mombasa of Mombasa and Maseno University, Town Campus.
Eduroam
Eduroam (education roaming) is the secure, world-wide roaming access service developed for the international research and education community.
Eduroam allows students, researchers and staff from participating institutions to obtain Internet connectivity across campus and when visiting other participating institutions by simply opening their laptop. KENET assists institutions in the setup of eduroam at their campuses.
Training
KENET aims to build technical capacity within its member institutions to support campus Local Area Networks (LANs) and Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs), manage the bandwidth distributed to the campuses, systems administration of hosted services and cyber security.
The training classes are usually conducted in a highly interactive environment that encourages peer-to-peer exchange of knowledge, ideas and current best practices. A mailing list of the techies is maintained to ensure discussions continue even after the end of the residential training period.
KENET has a training lab that gives the training participants a chance to experiment what they learn in class.
KENET has partnered with the Internet society to deliver an introduction to UNIX/Linux and basic networking course online. KENET has adopted this ISOC online course as a prerequisite for the other trainings offered.
Some of the training courses offered by KENET include:-
-
Training and Capacity Building for ICT Staff
-
Bandwidth Management and Optimization
-
Campus Network Design
-
Cyber Security
