Following the closure of learning institutions due to the COVID – 19 pandemic, there demand for online learning has increased. This has in turn led to extensive uptake and use of virtual classroom tools and learning management systems. The growing demand for online learning has spurred the demand and use of the KENET Web Conferencing platform (virtual classroom) https://conference.ke/ that has enabled member institutions to conduct online learning seamlessly.
On 6th and 7th May, 2020 KENET conducted a virtual training for nominated online teaching champions from various learning KENET member institutions on the use of the KENET web conference platform. The objective of the training was to equip participants with essential skills on how to conduct similar trainings at their respective institutions and to offer basic support knowledge and aspects of practice on https://conference.ke/ to users. Of the 122 participants nominated by member institutions, a total of 81 participants successfully completed the training.
The training aimed at developing the capacity of the participants to enable them to spearhead internal trainings within their institutions and offer level one (1) support during online sessions
Content delivery was divided into four sections namely presentation, demonstration, role discussion and question & answer to allow participants to gain maximum benefits from the training. The presentation, which was coupled with screenshots gave a summary on how to use and navigate the platform. The live demonstration enabled the participants to follow step by step guidelines on setting up online meeting and managing users. In addition, quick exercises were provided in between sessions to stimulate a hands-on approach to learning. ‘Manager’ role discussions were also incorporated to prepare participants on how to address possible challenges that may be faced when using the platform.
