Cyber Security Training Workshop 2015
The increasing focus on issues to do with cyber-crime and network security has seen marked interest and efforts by networks and systems administrators in securing ways to realign with the shifting trends. In view of the emerging trends KENET conducted a one week cyber security training workshop from 26th to 30th October 2015.
The training had 23 participants from KENET member institutions. This was a hands on training that focused on empowering the system administrators on how to secure the systems within their campuses, the workshop focused on how to empower network administrators on how to secure campus networks
Some of the participants had this to say after attending the sessions.
Mr. Omwago from Maseno University stated that, “Cyber security training was beneficial and quite informative to me in that it was an eye opener in manner that after the training I am able to provide better protection for assets by helping my organization to recognize and respond appropriately to real and potential security concerns. Am also in a good position to provide information that is personally useful to users in our organization, such as how to avoid scams, fraud, phishing, and ID theft including Information on how to protect personal and organization information and how to use e-mail, social media and the Internet safely”
“The KENET cyber security training I attended will enable me help my organization save money by reducing the number and extent of information security breaches. During the training, I learnt that the sooner a breach is identified, the lower the cost of addressing it will be. I will be able to reduce costs to the organization by allowing control measures to be designed into systems rather than adding them to installed systems. I think am well equipped to train the other ICT staff and help Africa International University Identify and mitigate security weaknesses in our systems, instead of having an external auditor identify them during a compliance audit, which will save the university from haphazardly creating a fix to meet minimal compliance requirement”, said Ms. Florence Kabee, IT Support Specialist at Africa International University
