To meet the Internet bandwidth demands of member institutions, KENET expanded the last mile infrastructure, national backbone network, and international circuits. The following is a summary of the expansion:
The KENET web conference system is an online service for organizing collaborative activities such as webinars, classes, webcasts and meetings. KENET launched the remote teaching pilot project in 2017. The remote teaching project was aimed at exploring the possibility of using the KENET web conferencing for remote teaching to reduce the cost of teaching multiple classes. Three universities namely Daystar University, Catholic University of East Africa and the University of Nairobi are participating in the project.
KENET Awards up to 15 travel grants per financial year to faculty and graduate students in Science Technology Engineering Mathematics (STEM) areas. Since 2014, KENET has awarded over 47 travel grants to member institutions. In the financial year 2016/2017, we awarded 12 travel grants. Seven (7) faculty members, five (5) graduate students from seven (7) member institutions benefited from the grants. As of September 2017, we had awarded 14 travel grants.
Our vision for having works by Kenyan researchers publicly available and accessible has been realized by the upgrade of our Research Infrastructures. Research Infrastructures (RIs) are the facilities, resources and services used by the science community to conduct research and foster innovation. By putting together efforts and developing RIs for the community, KENET’s long term goal is to improve the overall research productivity of the country.
