Half-Day Research Infrastructures Forum

KENET held the first research infrastructures forum on May 18, 2016 at Safari Park Hotel, Nairobi. The forum was meant to create awareness on the advanced global e-infrastructures available to Kenyan Researchers whose institutions are connected to KENET broadband network.

Special Interest Group on Computational Modelling and Materials Science (CMMS) and the NRF High Performance Computing research infrastructure grant

In the past one year, the SIG on CMMS led by Prof George Amolo of Technical University of Kenya (He is a Physics professor, formerly of University of Eldoret) has been very active. The research IT services team, led by Dr. Moses Thiga  at KENET has supported the SIG in many ways.

Do you need to register a .KE Second Level Domain for your institution ?

Kenya has finally approved registration of what are called Second Level Domains. This means it will now be possible to register and use domain names like helb.ke rather than helb.co.ke (or in addition to). KENET shall also be adopting the domain kenet.ke rather than the longer kenet.or.ke or kenet.ac.ke.

Do You have a Disaster Recovery Site and Off-site backup for your institution?

In April 2017, KENET conducted a survey of ICT directors of member universities / university colleges and among the questions we asked are the following:
 
  1. Does your institution have an ICT disaster management policy? Only 30 out of the 51 who responded said yes.
  2. Does your institution have off-site backup? Only 25 out of the 47 who answered the question stated that they had an off-site backup.

Understanding Cloud Services for Member Institutions

The higher education and research community (students, faculty, researchers and staff) take Cloud Services for granted. Most members of the community have a Google mail or Yahoo e-mail address (vc@gmail.com or steve@yahoo.com) and are vaguely aware that their e-mail is stored somewhere in the Internet or in the cloud. Advanced Scalable Campus Network Training 4th - 8th April, 2016

KENET successfully conducted the Advance Scalable Campus Network training from April 4-8th 2016. The training was conducted at the KENET training room located at University of Nairobi. The training had a total of 25 participants from 22 KENET member Institutions. This was an advanced training and the participants were required to have at least 3 years working experience on campus.
